Sci-Tech Academy Awards

Hollywood's technology brain trust gathered on Saturday night to honor its brethren at the annual AMPAS Scientific and Technical Awards presentation. Developers of 15 technologies were feted at the swanky soireee, held at the Beverly Wilshire. The awards had a definite digital leaning, with the first recognition of DI scanning, color grading, color management and projection technologies along with computer-based lighting and performance capture techologies. The Sci-Tech committee's investigation into these technologies is an exhaustive, multi-year undertaking, and the DI technology reviews alone produced a 300+ page document (can we technophiles have a sanitized version of that, maybe?). It was great to see Raz PR client Autodesk there cheering on the developers of the Lustre technology, and contingents from Prime Focus and Digital Domain among the supporters. Host Elizabeth Banks took care to properly pronounce the range of international recipient names and poked fun at the obscure tech lingo. Her overuse of the 'nerd' moniker felt like an inside joke. Brains and vision change the world. A sparkly dress and a big smile get you... well, a gig honoring brains and vision.
